Artist statement:
For the last several years I have been engaged in a search for a way to integrate a contemporary spirit
with my personal sense of aesthetics and love of traditional Chinese ink painting. The Distant Echoes Series is the direct result of these years of effort and exploration.
I have a deep admiration for traditional Chinese ink painting: it has an inner purity and luminosity that
shines like hidden gold. It moves and stimulates me. I am also attracted by the boldness and unexpectedness
of contemporary art. In my work, I have tried to incorporate qualities of both. In addition, I am fascinated by
the power of the Neolithic pottery created by craftsmen 5,000 years ago, and have used it as an inspiration in
my art.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to Hanart T Z Gallery for organising this first
. solo exhibition of my Distant Echoes works in Hong Kong, and to my many friends in Hong Kong for their
warm enthusiasm and support. Finally, I would like to thank the dedicated craftsmen of the Ru Gao Silk
Tapestry Workshop in Jiangsu Province who wove the Distant Echoes tapestries for me.
