Arthur Miller Returns to Genesis for First Musical
By MEL GUSSOW

In a large room near Times Square, Arthur Miller was rehearsing his first musical, "Up From Paradise" (book, lyrics, direction and narration by Mr. Miller, music by Stanley Silverman). Sitting at a table, Mr. Miller silently mouthed all the dialogue and lyrics along with his actors, savoring the lines and smiling at the jokes.

The playwright's obvious pleasure emerges from a painful experience. "Up From Paradise" is a reworking of last season's "The Creation of the World and Other Business," which the author described as a "catastrophic comedy" and which was regarded by some critics as something of a comic catastrophe.

The new old show opens April 23 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (Mr. Miller's alma mater). A university tour will probably follow and a New York engagement is planned for next season, under the auspices of the Music Theater Performing Group, the New York arm of the Lenox Arts Center.
