London: Hutchinson, 1952. 8vo. 181 pp. Very Good+. Hard Cover. Green cloth covered boards. Dust Jacket Very Good+, in Mylar wraps. DJ unclipped. B&W illustrations throughout.

Stunningly beautiful large woodcuts which were originally published in Bewick's 'A History of British Birds' make all the birds instantly recognizable. Reproductions of more than 70 woodcuts and descriptions from Bewick's History of British Birds, each accompanied by a short verse by 20th-century poet Arthur Seymour John Tessimond. Phyllis Barclay-Smith, an avid conservationist who in 1952 became Hon. Secretary of the Advisory Committee on Oil Pollution of the Sea, edited Bewick's descriptions, making every effort "to retain his original text as far as possible, merely bringing certain information up to date in view of ore recent ornithological knowledge." She provides an informative historical background in her Foreword. Item #17-0591
