Embellished by numerous wood engravings, designed and engraved by the author for a work on British fishes, and never before published." A facsimile reprint of the 1862 first edition. Bewick's memoirs were apparently finished on the 1st of November, 1828, seven days before his death. They were not published, however, until 1862. Frank Graham, in his introduction to this volume, suggests that this was due to "the religious and political views of Bewick which his daughter and others of his contemporaries disliked." Others have suggested that its delayed publication was due to it being "so replete with personal allusions that it could not see the light of day during the lifetime of his contemporaries." The 1862 edition was published by Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts after some editing by Jane Bewick who also added several additional woodcuts to Thomas Bewick's original manuscript.
