Portrait of a Gentleman with an Encyclopedia

[Philadelphia?] 1837. Oil on canvas. 30.5 x 25 inches. Signed R Street and dated 1837 lower right. Fine condition. Unframed on stretcher board. Robert Street, painter of portraits and historical subjects, was for many years a resident of Philadelphia, where he did much excellent work. He was born in 1796, and exhibited in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts during the period between 1815-1817. In 1824 his portraits were shown in Washington, D. C, where he painted several well k nown

men. In 1840, Robert Street held an exhibition of his work showing over two hundred oil paintings of historical subjects, landscapes, and portraits. Catalogues of this exhibition are accessible, but unfortunately they give little valuable information regarding the portraits, as they are frequently recorded as merely " a portrait of a lady" or a "portrait of a gentleman." This Exhibition opened on November 18, 1840, at the Artists' Fund Hall, Philadelphia. Item #51-1476
