Signed calling card of Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Field

[Washington, D.C.], 1877. Engraved calling card, 5.5x9.5 cm (2¼x3¾").
Inscribed on the reverse: "Stephen J. Field, Associate Justice of U.S. Supreme Court. Washington Mar. 8, 1877." Prior to serving on the U.S. Supreme Court , Feld was Chief Justice of California. In 1859 Field replaced the former chief justice of the California Supreme Court, David S. Terry because Judge Terry killed a United States Senator from California (David Colbreth Broderick) in a duel and left the state.
