(8vo), original green grained cloth, beveled edges, gilt title within an elaborate gilt wreath design to upper board, ornate gilt spine design, all edges gilt. Printed on heavy bond paper. First Edition.
Scarce first edition of the second bird book illustrated with the use of chromolithography, by "one of the most sought-after of the bird painters of the nineteenth century" (Lysaught: 110.) With accompanying poetry by various authors.
Some wear and soiling to cloth with rubbing to extremities, sunning to spine; Christmas gift inscription on front free end-paper dated 1856, scattered foxing throughout mostly to verso of plates, plates bright; very good.
