Famous American Series. (First Day Covers - Composers' Group). Stephen Collins, John Philip Sousa, Victor Herbert, Edward A, MacDowell, Ethelbert Nevin.

1940. Scott 884-888. 5 uncacheted addressed First Day covers, Artists' Group. Hippocrates authored the statement, "Ars longa, vita brevis”—Art is long, life is brief. The American artists, commemorated by the sixth group of the Famous American series, have passed on but their works and their accomplishments are enduring and a constant reminder of the beauty created by them. Without art, life would be intolerable, inconceivable. The men, honored by the Artists Group, have given pleasure to the world, they have added to our civilization, and have given American culture a distinct character. Announcement of the issuance of the Artists Group appeared in the Postal Bulletin of July 26, 1940, as follows:
"Reprint of notice which appeared in the Postal Bulletin of July 26, 1940". Commemorative Stamps--Famous American Series, Washington, July 24, 1940. Supplementing prior notices, postmasters and employees of the Postal Service are hereby advised of the issuance of the Artists' Group in this special series of postage stamps." From the collection of Frederick Langford. Item #59-3065
