The recipient, Barbara Bodichon, was the extra-marital child of Whig politician Benjamin Leigh Smith, the only son of the Radical abolitionist William Smith. Bodichon was a noted British educator and artist, and a leading 19th Century feminist and women's rights activist. Her aunt, Joanna Maria, married John Bonham-Carter, MP and founder of the Bonham-Carter family.
