"Épater les bourgeois!" was the war cry of the Decadent movement. But why stop there? In his journey to the end of night Rops paused to consider suicides, Satanism, bestiality, absinthe, naughty nuns, voyeurism, and wild sex in the working class. He didn't stop with the bourgeoisie – he scandalized his whole society. Whether this bosom friend of Charles Baudelaire was the most artistic pornographer of the 19th century or its most pornographic artist is a difficult judgement – regardless, he takes the podium in either category.
