Architectural Collage Ornament.
Beverly Hills: American Glass Art, 1989. Color decal on 3" diameter glass globe, presented in a Klearfold container.
From the New York Times of Dec. 7, 1989:
IN the it-was-only-a-matter-of-time department: this Christmas, Saks Fifth Avenue is selling a glass Christmas ornament by the architect Richard Meier. The ornament, bottom, which retails for $22.50, is part of the Signature collection from American Glass Art, a division of the Crane Corporation, which annually commissions ornaments by artists. The series honors ''native-born individuals whose achievements are uniquely expressive of their American heritage,'' among them the artists Keith Haring and Sam Francis, who did the ornament above.
''I wanted to do a beautiful little Christmas object,'' Mr. Meier said. The ornament's motif recalls a building elevation.
Mr. Meier calls this latest architect-designed object a ''collage ornament'' - presumably for modernist trees. Item #51-0512
Price: $200.00
