He was renowned for his compassion, his directness, and his extraordinary philanthropy in partnership with The Ireland Funds America, which changed the lives of people in Ireland both North and South. He established The Ireland Funds America Literary Award, The Ireland Funds Monaco and The Ireland Funds Germany. He resided in Monaco until his passing in October of 2012 at the age of 93.
