The map of Guyenne, an ancient French province, was commissioned in the 18th century by Charles Boutin, Intendant of the Generalitat of Bordeaux, who wished to provide his province with a more detailed and accurate map than that produced by Cassini for the whole of France. In 1761, a decree from the King's Council ordered the map to be surveyed, at the province's expense. Administrative responsibility for the Carte de la Guyenne was assumed by the Intendant, and the cartographic undertaking was entrusted to Pierre de Belleyme (1747-1819), a former officer in the Engineers, who left his name to the map. Of the 54 plates originally planned, only 48 were completed. The surveys, carried out from 1761 to 1774, on a scale twice that of the Cassini map, enabled the topographical part of the work to be carefully defined, differentiating roads and paths, forests and woods, vineyards, chestnut trees, "piñadas", moors, marshes and sand dunes....
